The Jeanie Johnston Visitor Shipyard

Blennerville Village near Tralee is the location of Ireland's newest and most unique maritime history experience- the building of a Tall Ship.

Timber Shipwrights and apprentices from Ireland - North & South, Britain, Continental Europe, Australia and North America have come to Tralee to build a full size sailing replica of the famous Jeanie Johnston (1847-58) the remarkable famine ship which never lost a passenger during 16 voyages from Tralee to North America.

The shipyard is designed to cater for visitors. The Jeanie Johnston Shipyard will be open to visitors right through the various phases of construction from June, 1998. Visitors are introduced to traditional shipbuilding, the design of the sailing ships and life aboard the emigrant vessels in the Visitor Centre.

Then they are guided through the workshops and ship yard site to view the shipwrights and apprentices at work. Each visit to the yard is a new experience as no day is exactly the same.
